On Wednesday, Vitalik Buterin expressed his support for Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion. Similar wars may continue in other parts, but that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t care about the Ukrainians and vice versa.
Buterin supports Ukraine
Ethereum’s cofounder tweeted Wednesday morning:
“Ukrainians don’t suffer from war alone. People in Yemen and Ethiopia are just as humane as Ukrainians. This is not a reason to ignore Ukrainians. It does not mean that we should stop and reflect on our actions, but it does suggest that we should also extend compassion to others.
This is in addition to the support the cryptocurrency proponent has shown towards Ukraine since the outbreak of war.
What is Buterin’s response to this question?
His latest tweet was in response to a tweet he sent asking European universities to accept Russian students who were punished for protesting against Putin’s regime.
Buterin replied to Anton Barbashin (Editorial Director of Riddle Russia), a news site where he stated:
“It would be a remarkable gesture if a European University would welcome Russian students who have been expelled from Russia because they protest the war. This would signal that Europe supports those Russians who oppose Putin and oppose war. Not all Russians are treated the same as Putin&Co.
Buterin responded that support for Ukrainians should be the priority, followed by those who are against Putin’s regime and decisions.
Buterin is neutral, Ethereum is neutral
Buterin famously stated that earlier on February 24, but
“Reminder: Ethereum neutral, but I am not.”
He had previously said in Russian that President Vladimir Putin’s invasion Ukraine was a crime against the Ukrainian and Russian peoples before this tweet.
However, Buterin’s tweet didn’t go uncontested. Others pointed out that, while the tweet was true, western media doesn’t reflect conflicts in other countries as accurately as it does in Ukraine. Another Twitter user found a Forbes 2017 news story that claimed that Putin had supported Ethereum following a meeting with Buterin.
