Spanish Telecom Giant Telefonica Embraces Bitcoin Payments

Telefonica, Spain’s largest mobile operator and network provider, has partnered up with Bit2Me for clients to use digital assets to pay for their services.

The adoption of cryptocurrencies seems to be at a high point in the Iberian nation. Vueling, the world’s largest airline, announced that travelers would be able to buy flight tickets in bitcoin starting January 2023.

Telefonica Says ‘Yes’ to Crypto

Customers could settle their bills in many cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether(ETH), Litecoin [LTC], Circle’s stablecoin USDC and others via the company’s online marketplace, Tu.

Telefonica partnered with Bit2Me in Spain to enable crypto payments. Bit2Me provided the infrastructure and will supervise the transactions.

Changpeng Zhao, the Chief Executive Officer at Binance (CZ), was immediately interested in the news and shared it via his Twitter account.

His company recently increased its presence on the Spanish market. Binance’s subsidiary, Moon Tech Spain, was approved by regulators to register as a Virtual Asset Services Provider in Europe two months ago.

Zhao stated that MoonTech’s registration in Spain was an acknowledgement of our teams’ hard work and commitment to providing a platform that puts users’ safety first.

Vueling also joined the bandwagon

Vueling, a Barcelona-based airline, is another prominent Spanish company that has joined crypto’s ecosystem over the past few months.

It partnered with BitPay in June to enable clients to purchase tickets in 13 digital assets such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ether(ETH), Bitcoin Cash/BCH), Litecoin [LTC], Dogecoin (“DOGE”), Shiba Inu” (SHIB) and many others.

It is expected that the move will be implemented by Vueling in 2023. This would make Vueling the first European low-cost airline to accept cryptocurrencies as payment methods.

Merrick Theobald, BitPay’s Vice President for Marketing, stated that the Spanish company “recognizes cryptocurrencies’ potential to transform the airline industry, making payment faster, safer, and more affordable on a global basis.”
