Vueling, one of the biggest Spanish airlines, will be joining BitPay to allow clients to pay for their tickets in a variety of cryptocurrencies beginning in 2023.
Vueling and Crypto take off
A recent press release stated that the Barcelona-based airline will use Universal Air Travel Plan technology (a global settlement network for the sector) in order to integrate the offering.
Vueling initially supports 13 cryptocurrencies, including the most popular ones according to market capitalization: Bitcoin (BTC), Ether(ETH), Bitcoin Cash [BCH], Litecoin (“LTC”), Dogecoin (“DOGE”), Shiba Inu “SHIB”), and others.
If the move goes through as planned, the Spanish company will be the first European low-cost airline to accept digital assets as payment methods.
Jesus Monzo, Manager of Distribution Strategy and Alliances for Vueling, believes that the move will reaffirm the company’s status in the digital airline market.
Merrick Theobald, BitPay’s Vice President for Marketing, stated that Vueling recognizes the potential of cryptocurrency to transform the airline industry. This will make payments more efficient, safer, and cheaper on a global basis.
In terms of both the size of its fleet and the number of destinations, the company is Spain’s largest airline. It has over 120 destinations in Europe, Africa and Asia.
Vueling also entered the Metaverse earlier in the year. It allowed clients to see and book their travels with the carrier via virtual reality distribution channels.
Crypto and the Airline Industry
The largest airport in Venezuela, Simon Bolivar International Airport (more commonly known as Maiquetia), announced last year that it would accept digital assets for settlement. Director Freddy Borges claimed that this initiative could help boost domestic tourism.
“Just like Russian passengers arrived at Margarita, they’ll also be coming to La Guaira via Conviasa. So we need to make progress in the new economic and technological systems that are accessible.”
Similar ambitions were also expressed by Dubai’s Emirates Airline. The firm stated that it would accept bitcoin as a method of payment and also add NFTs to its website for trading.
