Rio de Janeiro to Accept Cryptocurrency Payments for Taxes (Report)

Although cryptocurrency adoption can take many forms, it seems like cities and countries are more open to accepting certain payments made with such assets. Brazil’s second largest city stated that it would like to be the first to accept BTC payments as taxes.

Bloomberg Linea reported on the Rio De Janeiro announcement that residents would be able pay IPTU (Imposto Sobre a Propriedade Predial e Territorial Urbana), using digital assets starting next year. A note from the City Hall stated that the municipality is looking for companies who specialize in converting cryptocurrencies to Brazilian real. Bloomberg Linea reported that Rio De Janeiro will allow residents to pay IPTU (Imposto Sobre a Propriedade Predial e Territorial Urbana) using digital assets. The note also stated that the municipality wants to join the non-fungible token market. There were some suggestions to create NFTs using images of tourist attractions.
