Netflix, the American streaming giant, is set to release a documentary about Gerald Cotten’s death. The documentary focuses on Cotten’s role as founder and CEO at QuadrigaCX, a now-defunct Canadian cryptocurrency exchange.
Netflix announced the news via Twitter on Thursday, September 23, 2021. The documentary is titled “Trust no One” and features a team of QuadrigaCX investors as investigators. They will investigate the suspicious death of Cotten along with the theft of 250 million CAD by the CEO. In a shocking twist, the story then reaches into the present as a family fears for their mother’s safety. pic.twitter.com/OLY179J1W4

Netflix’s documentary is based on true events that took place at a Canadian cryptocurrency exchange. It collapsed in 2019. The company was one of Canada’s largest Bitcoin exchanges. However, its founder and CEO Gerald Cotten died from Crohn’s disease in Jaipur, India at the age of 30. Interesting was the fact that Cotten was the only person who had access to the cold storage wallet of the exchange, which meant that customers couldn’t get their money back. A court filing from that time revealed that QuadrigaCX owed approximately 250 million Canadian dollars ($197.5 million). The victims’ lawyers requested that the body of QuadrigaCX CEO be exhumed in order to confirm Cotten’s identity and cause of death. Canada’s securities regulator, Ontario Securities Commission (OSC), published its report on the investigation into QuadrigaCX in June 2020. The OSC stated that the company’s collapse was not due to Cotten’s suicide but because of fraudulent activities by the CEO while they were alive. However, it did not specify when the documentary would be released.
