Jack Dorsey and JAY-Z Launch Bitcoin Education Course in Brooklyn, New York

Block Head Jack Dorsey has teamed up with JAY-Z, the hip-hop artist to help fund Bitcoin education in the former’s home town. They will be educating Marcy Houses residents in Brooklyn, New York about why they should care and offer free classes on the topic.

The Bitcoin Academy

The educational program, titled “The Bitcoin Academy”, will be run by Najah J.Roberts of Crypto Blockchain Plug and Lamar Wilson, “Black Bitcoin Billionaire”. Roberts has appeared on Afro Tech and CNBC. Wilson has also been on Vice News and The Breakfast Club.

According to The Bitcoin Academy’s website the program will “empower” the local communities with knowledge and remove the informational barrier to entry. The website notes that Bitcoin is an open network but people are effectively prevented from accessing financial education if they don’t have the right to.

It is difficult to get experience with Bitcoin because it cannot be used widely to purchase basic goods and it is not usable without data plans or devices. However, Bitcoin payments are becoming more accepted. Strike has partnered with Shopify in order to allow product purchases via the lightning network.

The site states that the program “aims to provide education and empower the community with information, and get rid some of the obstacles so residents can learn more Bitcoin specifically and finance generally.”

All Marcy residents can attend the academy’s classes online or in person from June 22nd through September 7th. Dinner will be provided. Residents can also get free MiFi devices, 1-year data plans and smartphones.

Over the weekend, there will be programming for children aged 5-17 called “Crypto Kids Camp”. In the near future, this program will be expanded to other areas.

Jack and JAYZ discuss Bitcoin Education

JAY-Z stated today on Twitter that the academy’s goal is to provide people with tools to create independence for themselves, and the community around them.

Jack Dorsey, a long-standing Bitcoin enthusiast, stated that such education would help foster “long term thinking, local economies and self-confidence”. He also noted that Bitcoin is becoming a “critical instrument” for people in Africa and Central / South America.

Central American and African were the first and second countries to accept Bitcoin as legal currency. To encourage more people to adopt Bitcoin technology and to understand it, there are already education programs for Bitcoin in El Salvador.
