Emirates Flies Into the Metaverse With Airline NFTs

The United Arab Emirates national carrier announced it would launch utility-based and collectible NFTs. The first project is already underway.

Emirates announced on April 14 that it would be launching NFTs for customers and employees.

Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum (Emirates Chairman and Chief Executive) stated that the region is already a leader within the digital economy.

“Dubai, UAE and other countries are leading the digital economy. They have a clear vision and support it with practical policies and regulatory frameworks in areas like virtual assets, artificial intelligence and data protection.

Flying into the Metaverse

It also announced that the Emirates Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai will be transformed into a center of innovation. It hopes to attract global talent to “bring back the airline’s future-focused initiatives, including those related to the metaverse and NFTs.

Emirates used virtual reality (VR), technology more than five years ago on its website and app to provide travelers with an immersive 3D view and experience of the aircraft interiors.

It was the first airline in the world to launch a VR app on Oculus Store. The app showcased interactive cabin interior experiences aboard its A380 aircraft. The airline’s next move is to enter the Metaverse, furthering its quest for high-tech experience. According to the CEO:

“It’s fitting that Expo’s future-themed Emirates Pavilion is being repurposed to serve as a hub for cutting-edge future experiences, in line with the UAE vision for the digital economy.”

He said that the airline was excited about the “opportunities within the digital space of future” and has committed a substantial investment in financial and human resources terms.

We don’t know much about NFTs or how they might interact with passenger experiences.

NFT Market Outlook
