Craig Wright, the man who claimed to be Satoshi (the inventor) of Bitcoin, has been proven to have not had a business partnership or joint venture with Dave Kleiman. Kleiman is a Florida forensics expert. He must still pay $100 million compensation for Kleiman’s Florida company theft.
CoinDesk published the ruling in Wright’s case earlier today. CoinDesk reported that Wright was ordered to pay $100 million in damages in fiat currency. The Jury also wrote “0 BTC” below the line for Bitcoin damages.
Wright claimed that he was friends with Kleiman prior to his death in 2013. Kleiman also said that he had helped Wright edit the Bitcoin whitepaper. He maintained, however that they were not business partners. His brother, Kleiman, filed a lawsuit against Wright in Dave’s Estate and W&K Info Defense Research after Kleiman’s death.
The Jury was asked to review a variety of charges in this case. This included whether Wright was liable for W&K’s theft or fraud. He was found guilty of the previous, but cleared of all other claims.
The Verdict: Feelings
Wright stated that he is “remarkably happy” and “vindicated” by the outcome, while insisting that he was never a fraud. He claimed that he offered $12 million to Kleiman back in 2012, when Bitcoin was just $200 per coin. It would have been worth almost $3 billion today if that money had been kept and stored in Bitcoin by Kleiman.
Vel Freedman, the attorney representing the plaintiffs, was nevertheless happy to learn that they had received $100 million in settlements. He felt that the verdict was a positive precedent for the blockchain industry, as did his fellow attorneys.
“Wright refused the Kleimans their fair portion of what Dave created. We are extremely pleased to announce that W&K Information Defense Research LLC has been awarded $100,000,000 in recognition of Dave Kleiman’s outstanding contribution to bitcoin. ”
Wright won a legal battle against Cobra in June. This allowed Bitcoin.org to remove their Bitcoin whitepaper.
