Oxford City, one of the UK’s oldest soccer clubs, will allow its fans to pay in bitcoin for match tickets, food and drinks. After a long partnership between the team’s digital asset exchange CoinCorner, the initiative will be realized.
The soccer industry has been in touch with crypto many times over the years. Many players, including Neymar, David Beckham and Andres Iniesta have expressed an interest in the sector. Other clubs, however, have adopted digital currencies as a way to settle disputes, much like Oxford City.
BTC could be ‘The New Normal” in English Football
BBC reported that Oxford City teamed up with CoinCorner, a crypto platform, to accept the primary cryptocurrency for matchday payments and food and drink purchases.
This Saturday, the club will face Eastbourne Borough at Court Place Farm. As part of the multiyear agreement with CoinCorner the stadium will be renamed RAW Charging Stadium and the logo of the company will appear on the backs of players’ shirts.
Justin Merritt, Oxford City’s Director for Football, noted that the team must embrace new innovations like bitcoin in order to be self-sustaining. He also reflects on the long-term plans.
Merritt stated that while it’s not required for people to use our new technology, we believe that in time bitcoin payments will be the new norm in English football.
Daniel Scott, Chief Executive Officer at CoinCorner, commented on the decision. He believes that other soccer teams will follow Oxford City’s crypto path.
It’s a pleasure to see the club adopt bitcoin payments in the National League. This move will be a model for all non-league and Football League teams as digital currency becomes the norm for eventgoers and sports fans across the UK.
Soccer and crypto
Many of the most prominent soccer players have already joined the digital asset train. One example is Neymar, a Brazilian striker who bought two non-fungible tokens from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection (BAYC).
Ronaldinho, the 2005 Ballon d’Or Winner, teamed up to create his token called RON with decentralized exchange P00LS. He previously worked with Graph Blockchain to organize NFT experiences and events for his fans.
It is important to mention that other clubs have also adopted cryptocurrencies as a payment method, in addition to Oxford City. Some examples include the Brazilian Sao Paulo and the Mexican Tigres.
