The Australian Open (AO), one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world, is now entering the NFT side and Metaverse side.
Decentraland, a top virtual reality platform, will host this year’s championship. Fans will also be able buy non-fungible tokens that link to live match data.
O Dives into The Metaverse
Omicron cases in Australia are on the rise, so the Australian Open organizers decided to make it easier for both local spectators and international viewers to watch matches.
The tournament will take place in Decentraland. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the Rod Laver Arena main stadium, visit restaurants and watch tennis matches.
Craig Tiley, the AO Tournament director, stated that “with this next wave in technology, global tennis fans can have the opportunity to participate in the 2022 Australian Open as never before possible.”
The organization will also release 6,776 non-fungible tokens called “Art Ball NFTs“. Each token will represent a winning shot in all matches of the 2022 championship.
Owners will receive an airdrop containing footage from the point and virtual wearables. Other benefits are also available. If one of the 11 championship points lands on the plot, the owner of the connected NFT will be able to claim the physical tennis ball used in the match in a custom-made case.
The same technology used to track the in-game points of matches will also be used to track the non-fungible tokens.
The “Art Ball NFTs”, which will be available for purchase on January 10, and the AO Decentraland event, which will be live on January 17, will also go on sale.
Who else has partnered with Decentraland
Samsung 837X, the new metaverse experience from Korean electronics giant Samsung, was introduced earlier this week. Decentraland will empower the feature to allow clients to virtually participate in quests and live music events.
Samsung stated that “best of all, you can earn NFT Badges and exclusive, limited-supply Samsung Decentraland Wearables to customize the avatars you create,”
For a short time, Samsung 837X will open in Decentraland. The Korean company will continue to offer the experience on new platforms throughout the year.
“Metaverse allows us to transcend spatial and physical limitations to create unique virtual experiences that cannot be replicated anywhere else.” “Innovation is part of our DNA and we can’t WAIT for you to experience this growing virtual world,” Michelle Crossan-Matos, Samsung’s spokesperson concluded.
